On Friday, I had lunch with a producer-friend. After some industry talk, our discussion turned to the apparent, pending war in Iraq.

After swapping our respective opinions, he asked me if I thought there was any way to prevent the looming war. I told him the only likely way would be if the media coverage of the "Showdown in Iraq" were to suddenly stop, the world would quickly forget it was an issue and move on.

Never, never in my wildest dreams did I think that the very next morning the global media machine would turn it's focus onto another story.

And never, never did I imagine that seven of the greatest humans of our time would be the price for such a distraction.

Astronauts are pure and simple. Dedicated and committed. Determined and directed with specific missions and calculated outcomes. All in the sincere effort to improve the future of our existence.

Maybe. Just maybe, one day politicians will aspire to be as honorable, truthful and brave as astronauts.

Peace be with their souls and with all of us.
